The Public Resource Ambassador program was established in 1991-92 to communicate campus needs to members of the general assembly and other governmental officials. The local representatives and senators have been very supportive, but they are few. It was determined that the best resource for active support would be the 14,000 alumni and 4,500 parents of current students who live in the state of Missouri.
A system was established to recruit alumni and parents to serve as links to their own senators and representatives. These ambassadors will then articulate campus needs to Missouri public officials. The state was divided into six geographical areas and alumni/parents were recruited to coordinate areas and ask additional parents and alumni to assist in individual legislative districts. There are currently 136 Public Resource Ambassadors in touch with 103 separate legislators. The University of Missouri has recognized the importance of volunteers for support and brings alumni each year to Jefferson City from all four campuses to recognize public officials through a Legislative Recognition Day. This has been a rallying activity for our Public Resource Ambassadors and provides a "show of support" to our public officials in the capitol.
